The general term given to those that would defy societal norms for that time and sit anywhere except the back of the bus was "freedom riders". Groups of people made up mostly of whites would enter the bus with several black friends and allow the friends to sit among them. Protection was given to those people and eventually they prevailed and all public transportation is now desegregated. It was not just a southern thing which is what a lot of people do not remember. The north was just as segregated as the south during a large portion of the early twentieth century.
