The modern term is "hieroglyphs" (nothieroglyphics), which is derived from the Greek words for "sacred carved writing". This was an error of early historians, who thought that the writing system was only used for religious texts (hence "sacred") - when the script was deciphered it was obvious that the writing recorded not only religious texts, but conversations, poems and historical accounts. The name should then have been changed to simply "glyphs", but the old name had become widely used.

In the ancient Egyptian language, the words drf and sS meant "writing" - hieroglyphs did not record vowels, so we can not know how these words were pronounced.

They used 3 "alphabet-like" systems: Uniliterals, biliterals, and triliterals.

Uniliterals represented single consonants. biliterals represented two consonants. Triliterals represented three consonants.
