The first day of summer or winter is called the solstice.

The name of the first scientist who used the term element was Johan Gadolin in the year 1760.
Individual weather events, such as a storm, a cold winter or a hot summer do not effect climate in a given area. Climate is the statistics of weather, typically over a period of at least 30 years. Climate change is long term trends in climate and it is possible for short term changes to go in the opposite direction of the long term trend.
This depends entirely on where you live on the globe. If you live in a tropical climate, you may expect weather to be fairly consistant throughout the year. If you live in a temperate climate, you may expect snow in winter and warm weather in summer. It all depends on where you are.

The first day of winter is the correct technical term. The winter solstice is a single moment each year that occurs between December 21 and 23 in the northern hemisphere. It is the moment when a pole is furthest from the sun. The hours of daylight change from getting shorter to getting longer. The day on which this happens is the first day of winter. Because it is difficult to determine the moment of solstice, by observation, to a precision of less than a day; the first day of winter is often referred to as the winter solstice. The first day of winter in the southern hemisphere lies between June 20 and 23 when the northern hemisphere is experiencing the summer solstice.
My understanding is that it is neither. The term "Olympiad" refers to a 4-year period between Olympic games. It was easier when the winter and summer games were in the same year, but now the word describes the summer games only. The Sochi games are technically called the 22nd Winter Games.
