Through the Looking Glass is based on a game of Chess. This is the principal device running through the book, which serves both to define the action and to push it forward. The whole of the Looking-glass World is laid out like a giant chess board, all the characters Alice meets represent chess pieces and the action of the book itself mirrors the action of a chess game.
Other themes which are explored (in both Alice books) include exploration, identity, language and communication, youth, education, freedom and confinement, violence, and madness.

"Through the Looking Glass" is a sequel to "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and follows Alice as she enters a fantastical world through a mirror. The occasion celebrated in the story is the fictional world's "birthday," where various characters engage in whimsical and nonsensical activities.
Through the Looking Glass culminates with a dinner party which is being held to celebrate the promotion of Alice from pawn to queen.
Early on in the book, Alice draws attention to the bonfire that is being built for the next day. This suggests that the action takes place on November 4th, the day before Guy Fawke's Night. `Do you know what to-morrow is, Kitty?' Alice began. `You'd have guessed if you'd been up in the window with me -- only Dinah was making you tidy, so you couldn't. I was watching the boys getting in stick for the bonfire -- and it wants plenty of sticks, Kitty! Only it got so cold, and it snowed so, they had to leave off. Never mind, Kitty, we'll go and see the bonfire to-morrow.'
Modern critics tend to believe that one theme in Alice in Wonderland is the changes and awkardness of a child going through puberty. As Alice went through Wonderland and grew and shrank, she had to deal with feeling out of place. It also had to do with a loss of innocence as Carroll admired the purity of youth. As she went through Wonderland she had experiences that cause her to physically grow, but also be face to physical and moral perils that mirror the challenges we face on the road to adulthood.

The mood of the Play Through The Looking Glass is curious. Alice throughout the whole book is very intimidated because she doesn't know anything about the strange world through "The looking-glass". Everyone in the play is asking her strange rhetorical questions and telling her she isn't really Alice.
