In book 7 Odysseus is on his way to the palace of Alcinous, the king of the Phoenicians. Athena helps him travel to the palace safely and tells him to appeal to the queen. Once he arrives at the palace he begs the queen and king to help him on his journey. They are so moved and impressed that they not only offer him safe passage but also their daughters hand in marriage.

Book 8 is called the Phaecian games. Odysseus had landed in the land of the Phaecians in book 7, and after staying a night, King Alcinous starts the games. Odysseus is insulted during the games by Euryalus and asked him to join in with the games, Odysseus did so and beat everyone. It ends with Alcinous asking Odysseus who he is - Odysseus does no tell him until the beginning of book 9.
