Note how in both Kidnapped and Treasure Island, for example, the young hero's own father dies in the first few pages! Perhaps the first father figure in Kidnapped is David's uncle, and the uncle tries to kill him (bad father!). Alan (according to a wanted poster) is old enough to be a father to David, but he is ambiguously a mixture of good and evil...
