The timing for a Chrysler LA 318 is 5 degrees before TDC. When installing a distributor ensure that you have the engine at 5 degrees before TDC and then rotate the distributor till the rotor is just before the #1 cylinder terminal and the points should just begin to open. After you have done this, tighten down the hold down clamp just tight enough so you can still rotate the distributor. Mark the 5 degree before top dead center on your pointer with a white paint pen, then mark your damper scribe mark with the white paint pen. Disconnect your vacuum line from your vacuum advance and plug the hose with a gold tee. Hook up your inductive timing light and then start the engine. Aim the light at your damper and rotate the distributor clockwise until your marks align. If the engine RPM increases loosen the throttle linkage on your carb until the engine is at about 750 rpms or a suitable range for you. After you have completed this take the vehicle out for a drive and make any carb adjustments and recheck your timing once you park the vehicle again.

Start the engine and point the timing light at the timing marks. The flashing timing light will cause the timing mark on the harmonic balancer appear to be stationary and aligned with the timing marker. It should be lined up with "10 BEFORE." If not, turn the distributor until it is. Turn off the engine and tighten down the distributor hold-down. Unhook the timing light.
