its not very happy, Catherine is living in a manor with her family, its hot, dirty and gross shes forced to do "ladylike" responsibilities and keep a journal for her older brother Edward. It takes place in medieval times. Catherine doesn't enjoy her life and rather be a peasant. Catherine is very curious and wants to know what the world is like outside of her home and her town. The tone is wondrous, docile, confused, harsh.
