The 90's Chevy half-ton pickups had a tow rating of 5500 lbs regardless of the engine size. I don't believe that Chevrolet ever put a diesel in a half-ton pickup. It would have had to have been custom installed. The 6.5L Diesel only had a tow rating of about 6000 lbs in the 2500 and 3500 pickups. The 6.5L Diesel was nothing special.
If you want to tow a boat buy a ford f250 or f350 if you want the most power go with the f350 that is the most reliable.
