The only treatment that has been called a "cure" by physicians researching IBS is gut-directed or gut-specific hypnotherapy. This treatment has been used for both children and adults with IBS, typically with dramatic results.

Hypnotherapy must be done with IBS specific protocols in order to be effective. Patients have the option of seeing a hypnotherapist in person or using an at-home self-hypnosis program for Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Most treatment programs are several months in duration, with daily practice sessions.

There is no cure for Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Although I found some things that trigger it. For example red sauce like on Pizza or spaghetti, parmesan, cheeses, and nuts or peanut butter. I just try to stay away from those things. I found that pepcid and zantac work well when eating those foods above.

To begin you should make some dietary changes, also maybe some herbs from a nutritional store and as of today there are not a lot of medicines to take but there are a few, you would have to consult your doctor about that. Unfortunately this is about all you can do to treat IBS. Hopefully there is research being done as we speak so people who get IBS in the future will not suffer like so many of us.

According to the patient support book The First Year: IBS, there are five main categories of treatments for Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Although there currently is no cure for Irritable Bowel Syndrome, the options summarized below should allow you to significantly improve or even prevent all IBS symptoms.

The main IBS treatment categories are:

1. Dietary management.

The IBS diet guidelines pioneered in the book Eating for IBS (high soluble fiber, careful with insoluble fiber, low fat, avoidance of trigger foods) ten years ago have been repeatedly validated since with clinical studies. Dietary management is of primary importance to many, if not most, people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Although diet does not cause the underlying pathology of IBS, eating properly for IBS can reduce or prevent symptoms while eating trigger foods can cause symptoms to flare.

2. Supplements keyed to specific IBS symptoms

Probiotics, prebiotic soluble fiber supplements, enteric coated peppermint oil capsules, and high volatile oil medicinal strength herbal teas (fennel, peppermint, chamomile, ginger) can address diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, gas, and bloating.

Probiotics and prebiotic soluble fiber supplements work best taken daily and may take several days to several weeks to make a significant difference. Enteric coated peppermint oil capsules and high volatile oil herbal teas can be taken as needed and usually work very quickly (within an hour or two for capsules, within minutes for teas).

Supplements such as medical foods (these are non-prescription) that are formulated specifically for Irritable Bowel Syndrome are more likely to be beneficial than general digestive aids, and are much less likely to include unnecessary added ingredients that can worsen IBS.

3. Gut directed hypnotherapy

This is the only treatment that at least one clinical study has deemed "a cure" for IBS. There are registers of hypnotherapists trained specifically in IBS protocols in the US and the UK. Alternately, there are at-home self-hypnosis programs for Irritable Bowel Syndrome that studies show give the same dramatic improvements in symptoms.

4. Stress Management

Although stress is not the underlying cause of IBS, it is a trigger for symptoms. Practicing stress reduction activities such as yoga or meditation, excercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and including enjoyable social activities in your life can all help reduce stress and the IBS symptoms stress can trigger.

5. Prescription Medications for IBS

The only two IBS-specific drugs on the US market (Lotronex and Zelnorm) have now been pulled by the FDA and are availalbe -if at all - under very limited circumstances.

Prescription anti-spasmodics are commonly given for abdominal pain and spasms, although studies have found that enteric coated peppermint oil capsules have a better success rate for these symptoms. Prescription laxatives and anti-diarrheals are also available. Physicians may prescribe acid blockers for people who have both reflux/GERD and IBS, but patients should be aware that these drugs can worsen IBS symptoms.

Laxatives would help with the diarrhea and loperamides would help with constipation. But it is important to treat the spasmatic colon too.. I would check out this product called donnatal. On their website, it says it's used to treat the symptoms of IBS (irritable colon, spastic colon, mucous colitis and acute enterocolitis). Hope this helps!
