The "tropics" or "tropical zone" is the area of Earth where the Sun passes directly overhead at one point during its orbit. That area is bounded by the Tropic of Cancer, about 23.6 degrees north latitude, and the Tropic of Capricorn at about 23.6 degrees south latitude.
