The one and only source of authority regarding how Islamists should conduct themselves is the Qur'an. The verses of the Qur'an are believed to have been written down by The Prophet Mohammed before his death in 623AD as they were dictated to him by the angel, Gabriel. The Qur'an contains writings which cover every aspect of Islamic life and how Islalmists should react in any situation. At the time The Prophet was taking refuge in a desert cave after the people of Mecca rejected his preaching.

Islamic clerics who conduct Mosque prayers are called Imams. There are also higher Islamic clerics, Mullahs, who are highly educated in Islamic law and theology who may also lead Mosque prayers. Many Mullahs lay claim to having memorized the entire Qur'an.

The only authority that Muslims rely on is that of Allah's (SWT). To live their lives, Muslims stick to the word of Allah (SWT), either through the Qura'n or "Hadith-e-Qudsi". (the words of Allah revealed and spoken indirectly, through Muhammad, may peace be upon him)

Another primary source on which the basis of a Muslim's life and actions are built are the "sayings and actions of the Prophet (PBUH), known as Hadith and Sunnah respectively. These "Hadiths and Sunnahs" are compiled in many books.

Though these are the two primary sources of legal thinking in Islam, there are also secondary sources including Ijma and Qiyas.

What do gaps in evidence cause historians?

Historians rely on primary sources to reach conclusions. Gaps in history, where there is no written documentation of events may leave historians in a quandary. They must then rely on archaeological evidence, and secondary sources, if available. Historians must ask the following: Is the information reliable? What was the reputation of the writer at the time? Does the archaeological record, primary, or secondary sources disagree with previously published historiography concerning the person or event? How accurate is prior published historiography concerning the subject matter? New evidence can displace old theories regarding history, so historians must be ready to adjust their thesis to reflect this information. Historians must also recognize that myth may shroud the truth about history. "Lost Cause" mythology concerning the American Civil War is a good example of lies perpetuated as history that has been disproved by primary sources.
