To properly understand any particular passage of scripture, it is important to, first of all be familiar with the entire canon of scripture as a whole and then to look carefully at the passage in its immediate context.

2+Peter 1:20-21 - "Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost."

Chapter six, verse four of the epistle to the Hebrews begins with a conjunction 'for' or 'because', this means that what follows is given as a reason for what was said before that, it is a continuous thought that flows through, so we cannot break it up into separate thoughts or isolated statements, we must follow the thought through from beginning to end. What the writer is saying before the 'for' in verse four is, let's not talk about the basic doctrines of Christian faith, let's not lay the foundation again, but let's move on to a higher level - why? and then comes the conjecture 'for', and now we can see what he is talking about in verses four to six. There is no reason for the author to lay the foundation of "the doctrine of repentance from dead works and faith towards God", for they already have accepted that doctrine and have repented from dead works, turning to God in faith, and so it is is impossible for them to repent again or to get saved again, they already have been saved and received the Holy Ghost, and that cannot be repeated, they cannot be born again, again - that is a one time transaction, just as the Son of God cannot be crucified again, so let's leave off the basics and move on to spiritual maturity. So it is in this context, that we must understand Hebrews 6:4-6, then it becomes very clear that the writer is not talking about any real persons that were once lost, then got saved and then got lost again, which would be ridiculous, and that is the point, that it is just as ridiculous for those that are saved to continuously try to establish the basis of their salvation, and not rather to grow and develop to full spiritual maturity and a deeper more meaningful relationship with God in grace and knowledge of their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

How do you write Bible chapter and verse?

Standard citation isBook chapter:verse(s) For example, if one were to refer to the Epistle of James, chapter two, verse 24, one would write, James 2:24. When referring to a block of text, for example, The Second Epistle of Peter, chapter one, verses 18 through 21, one would write, 2 Peter 1:18-21. When referencing multiple verses out of sequence, but within the same chapter, write, Hebrews 5:1, 4, 7-10. This, of course, is the Epistle to the Hebrews, chapter five, verses one, four, and seven through ten.
