The B-52 Stratofortess heavy bomber was the most powerful and feared weapon deployed during the war. The only weapon the enemy really feared, and the only weapon the American Fighting Man truly respected; and was awed by. Even more so than the Iowa class battleship, the USS New Jersey. The USS New Jersey was the only United States battleship to fire it's nine 16" rifles in the Vietnam War.
USN battleships were named after US states; such as the USS Arizona, USS California, USS Nevada, USS New York, USS Texas, USS Tennessee, USS Oklahoma, USS Alabama, USS South Dakota, USS Washington, USS Mississippi, USS West Virginia, USS Utah, etc.
there were 8 frigates on the American sife- the USS Constitution, the USS John Admas, the USS President, the USS United States, the USS Constellation, the USS Boston, The USS New York, and the USS Congress
Two submersibles were actually involved in the recovery of the Mk-28 weapon lost over the water near Palomares, Spain. The DSV Alvin located the weapon lost in the Mediterranean Sea in 1966. It found the weapon on March 17, but was dropped and lost when it was being raised. The Alvin submersible found the weapon again on April 2 at a depth of 880 meters. Then, another submersible, the unmanned torpedo recovery vehicle CURV-III attempted to raise the weapon on April 7. The weapon was raised, along with the CURV by the USS Petrel, and then taken back to the United States by the USS Cascade.
