A spring apparatus is often used to figure out the force constant of a spring. It has a ruler, spring (with a circular platform to add masses on) and a needle (place at 0 on the ruler). Because force and distance are directly proportional, as you add masses and see the distance on the ruler you can easily figure out the force constant with the equation Fe = kx , where Fe = FG = mg

A coil spring, also known as a helical spring, is a mechanical device, which is typically used to store energy due to resilience and subsequently release it, to absorb shock, or to maintain a force between contacting surfaces. They are made of an elasticmaterial formed into the shape of a helix which returns to its natural length when unloaded.

One type of coil spring is a torsion spring: the material of the spring acts in torsion when the spring is compressed or extended. The quality of spring is judged from the energy it can absorb. the spring which is capable of absorbing the greatest amount of energy for the given stress is the best one. Metal coil springs are made by winding a wire around a shaped former - a cylinder is used to form cylindrical coil springs.

helical spring is of two type. 1. open coiled 2. closed coiled.

open coiled is used as shock absorbers. notice the sping used in motor bikes.

What are helical springs?

Helical springs are the typical, common, wound springs used in tension or compression. The term 'helical' comes from the spring being a helix- the wire is wound around a mandrel, advancing along the length of the mandrel as it is wound.
