The main usage for this isotope is to track the blood cells in the body and observe the development of red blood cells to tell if a person's blood is healthy. The way that the isotope is placed into the body is by injection of the isotope via needle. Once the isotope is inside the body it will begin to give off a form of radiation. That radiation can then be followed by detectors that have been specifically placed around the body to observe and record the health of red blood cells. Iron 59 can also help detect Anaemia, which is a deficiency of lack of iron in the blood. People with particular diets, e.g. Vegetarians, are most likely to develop Anaemia as they can have a lack of iron intake within their diet (as most iron is usually found in red meat) Women are also more prone to developing the deficiency then men as a regular, heavy period can cause the body to lose a vast amount of blood.
