There have been many people who ask similar questions and there have been many answers. I personally believe that those are two completely different questions. The usefulness of religion for society from a non-religious point of view is about control, while a religious point of view is more of moral values. The individual is the tricky part about this question, it is mainly because each individual is different than the last. It could be any number of reasons from salvation, to acceptance, to seeing a sign, even to simply wanting to believe. This question has no real answer but it is a great debate topic, as long as both parties involved are not going to take the other persons side as an insult to their beliefs.
