Worn camshaft
Worn lifters
Worn pushrods
Worn rockers

If we are talking about valve lifters, remove cylinder head and pushrods and lifters will be excessable.
Exhaust leaks, bent pushrod
If it has hydraulic lifters, you do not adjust the valves.
Worn valve train starting with the camshaft lobes.
i was told by a Chevy serviceman that the ticking noise was coming from the fuel injectors firing.but to me it sounded more like lifters tapping or floating.

Yes it does. Chevy did not use solid lifters in that engine.
