The U.S. has never made a silver penny. For one thing, it would contain more silver than a dime, so the Mint would be losing 10 or 11 cents on each one!

What you have is an ordinary Indian Head cent that was plated for use in jewelry or something similar. Unfortunately, the plating means it's considered to be a damaged coin so it's only worth a couple of cents. Unplated, it would be worth 1-3 dollars in average condition.
