Assuming the coin is circulated, the 1897-O Morgan dollar is a better date New Orleans Mint coin. For an accurate assessment of value the coin needs to be seen and graded. In general retail values for low grade coins are $38.00-$40.00, better grade are $41.00-$50.00 and coins showing almost no wear run from $80.00-$275.00. Values are a market average and only for coins in collectible condition, coins that are bent, corroded, scratched, used as jewelry or have been cleaned have little or no value to a collector or dealer.

The New Orleans Mint coined Morgan dollars from 1879 to 1904, so you need to post new question with a date.

About $17 or $18, or more if silver rises dramatically in price (as of January 30, 2008, silver is $16.76 per troy ounce and the Morgan silver dollar has an Actual Silver Weight of 0.7734 troy ounces, giving it a "melt value" of about $12.96). Note that there would be no "P" mint mark - coins produced in Philadelphia at that time had no mint mark.
