1950 is not a rare date for most US quarters, unless they have a recut mint mark (see below).
Washington quarters were made of 90% silver from 1932 to 1964; in lower grades the coin's value is mostly determined by the value of the silver it contains - about 1/6 of a troy ounce. Currently they are worth about $5.50 based on silver content.
Look on the back of the coin to see if there's a small mint mark letter below the bow in the wreath. It may be blank or there may be a D or S.
Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 01/2013:
No mint mark (Philadelphia):
Uncirculated - $10.00 to $425.00 depending on quality
"D" mint mark (Denver):
Uncirculated - $10.00 to $387.50
"S" mint mark (San Francisco):
Uncirculated - $10.00 to $3160.00
Recut mint marks:There are two rarer varieties that have re-cut mint marks. One has an S cut over a D, and the other is the opposite. Any coin that seems to have a recut mint mark needs to be authenticated by a certified dealer or appraiser."S over D" mint mark:
Very worn - $31.05
Moderately worn - $51.75
Slightly worn - $80.50
Almost no wear - $2,820
Uncirculated - $390.00 to $4090.00
"D over S" mint mark:
Very worn - $28.75
Moderately worn - $49.45
Slightly worn - $69.00
Almost no wear - $205.20
Uncirculated - $270.00 to $23130.00
DISCLAIMER: The retail values quoted are the best available as of the date shown, but may vary due to market fluctuations. Also the wholesale (buying) price of a coin will be less than the selling (retail) price. A reputable coin dealer will be able to give a more accurate valuation based on inspection of the coin.
