As of 11/2010, retail values are approximately $5-$9 in circulated condition and $30 or so uncirculated.

A 1953 C US $5 bill will have red printing and the words United States Note across the top, indicating that it was issued directly by the government instead of by the Federal Reserve System. US Notes were discontinued in the 1960s as a cost-saving measure.

As of 04/2011 approximate prices are:

With a red seal (United States Note):

Circulated: $5 to $9 depending on the bill's condition

Uncirculated: $12

With a blue seal (Silver Certificate):

Circulated: $8 to $10

Uncirculated: $18

Serial Numbers

A bill's serial number is a counter and a security feature. In most cases it doesn't affect a bill's value or help to identify it. Some collectors specialize in bills with low serial numbers (e.g. 00000005) or unusual patterns (12344321) so these can bring above-average prices.

In God We Trust

That phrase was first put on $1 bills in 1957 and other denominations starting in the 1960s, so the fact that a 1953 bill doesn't have it is not a mistake.

DISCLAIMER: The values quoted are market averages as of the date shown, but may be different for an individual bill due to variations in quality and other factors. Also the wholesale (buying) price of a bill will be less than the selling (retail) price. A reputable currency dealer will be able to give a more accurate valuation based on an in-person inspection.
