Sorry, but it's plated. The US never struck gold 50 cent pieces. A gold coin the side of a half dollar would contain hundreds of dollars worth of metal, so not even the most foolish bureaucrat would authorize that much of a loss on each one minted.
Unfortunately the coin isn't worth anything extra except as a curiosity or display piece. Collectors consider plated coins to be altered items.
Even if you could remove the plating it would cost more to take it off than it would be worth as precious metal.
Gold currently sells for about $950 per oz.
depends anywhere from 200.00 250.00
as of 09/26/11
Please look at the coin again, no US $5 gold coins exist, but there is a $10.00 gold Olympic coin.
?
1100.00
Sorry it only has face value.
50 cents. It is intended for circulation and not made out of any precious metals.
The US Mint made no commemorative coins of any type dated 1985. Many gold plated and counter stamped Kennedy Half's exist and are considered novelty coins with no collectible value.
The extra date and the gold plate were added after the coin left the mint. Collector value = none. Novelty value = a couple dollars.
Current retail value for a PF-65 Deep Cameo is $10.60
Eisenhower was on the DOLLAR coin in the 1970s. KENNEDY has been on the half dollar since 1964. A 1985 Kennedy half is still worth 50 cents.
Half a dollar. Idiot.
In 1985, the sheqel ranged from about 1 to the dollar, up to about 1.5 to the dollar.
A lot of JFK halves have been privately plated and sold at high markups as "collectibles". Unfortunately 1971 and later halves are copper-nickel, not silver so the underlying coin is only worth 50 cents and has no real collectible value. The plating means it's an altered coin and would cost more to remove than what it's worth.
Face value only.
5-12-11>> First thing is, it's not a coin, it's a token. It has no denomination and is not legal tender. The front has a left facing portrait of Kennedy with his full name above and the date 1985. The reverse has the "Double Eagles" and the dual dates 1960 & 1985. I found one on the web (Rogers Market) for $2.95 NOTE: Many different types of so-called Kennedy commemorative coins and tokens have been sold, some are gold plated Kennedy half dollars that have been counter stamped with different dates, others are privately minted pieces. But none of them are made by the US Mint and have very little if any value at all.
July 13, 2009 The 1985 Kennedy half dollar was minted at 2 US Mint facilities, Philadelphia and Denver. Circulation issues are made of copper-nickel and are only worth 50¢ so if you got it in pocket change, spend it. If you have an uncirculated version its values are as shown below.
