You can request a history letter from S&W. They will require the serial number, caliber AND a photograph of both sides of the revolver, as Smith & Wesson serial numbers were not exclusive in those days. More information below.

Assuming that you have a single shot pistol, these are worth $75-$100, depending on condition. They are a modern day version of a black powder pistol. They are dated not by serial number, but a 2 LETTER code in a hollow square. Most date from the 1970s
