You didn't give any information about the coin's date or condition, so the best I can do is point you to a website that lists values. See http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/prices/5gld/pricesgd.shtml, for example. Also, to improve searching I had to make a minor change to your question, as these coins are known to collectors as "capped bust" pieces rather than "capped heads".
depends on whether you have a draped bust or a capped bust, and if capped then large stars or small stars or 50 over 20 variety -- and what condition is it?
It's a Capped Bust Half dollar and average coins are valued at $50.00- $100.00
Circulated coins run from $60.00 to $400.00 depending on grade.
It depends on if it's a Capped Bust or Seated Liberty coin. Post new question.
The US half dollars minted from 1796 to 1839. There were two major designs (draped bust and capped bust) with several varieties
Several different reverses are depicted on the half dollar coin: * Flowing Hair, Draped Bust, Capped Bust and Seated Liberty display a heraldic eagle * The Barber half displays a heraldic eagle, but a different design from the preceeding. * The Walking Liberty half displays a perched eagle. * The Franklin Half displays the Liberty Bell. * The Kennedy Half has the Presidential Seal and in 1975 and 1976 Independence Hall was on the reverse of the Bicentennial half dollar.
A 1821 Hald Dollar - aka - Capped Bust Half Dollar - in good condition (G4) is worth: $75.00; if the mint state is MS60, the value rises to: $1300.
"Capped Bust" refers to the image of Liberty represented on the obverse of the coin. A similar image was used for all US silver coins between about 1807 and about 1839. This is a pointer to an image of a Capped Bust dime - the picture of Liberty is quite similar on the half dollar: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Capped_Bust_dime.jpg
I am not aware of such a coin. The Draped Bust Half Dime was minted from 1796 - 1797; the Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle Half Dime was minted from 1800 - 1805; the Capped Bust Half Dime was minted from 1829 - 1837; and the Liberty Seated Half Dime was minted from 1837 - 1873.
* all the Flowing Hair Half Dollars * all the Draped Bust, Small Eagle Half Dollars * all the Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle Half Dollars * all the Capped Bust Half Dolllars * Seated Liberty Half Dollars: 1842-0 (small date); 1847/6; 1851; 1852; 1855-S; 1870-CC; 1873 (open 3); 1874-CC; 1878-S * Barber Half Dollars: 1892-0 (micro 0); * Walking Liberty Half Dollar: 1916-S; 1921; 1921-D; 1938-D There are no Franklin or Kennedy Half Dollars that 'stand out.'
Please check again and post a new question. The first nickels were minted in 1866. If you have a Capped Bust Half Dime - if this coin is in at least good condition (G4), its value is at least $45.00.
The initial 5 cent coins minted by the US mint were the Shield 5 cent coins - and they were initially minted in the year 1866. Prior to that, the Draped Bust Half Dime, Capped Bust Half Dime, and the Seated Liberty Half Dime were minted. However, there were NO 5 cent coins minted in the year of 1815.
