The Yellowstone lake.One of the world's largest alpine lakes, encompassing 132 square mi, Yellowstone Lake was formed when glaciers that once covered the region melted into a caldera-a crater formed by a volcano. The lake has 141 mi of shoreline, less than one-third of it followed by the East Entrance Road and Grand Loop Road, along which you will often see moose, elk, waterfowl, and other wildlife. In winter you can sometimes see otters and coyotes stepping gingerly on the ice at the lake's edge.
