Buffalo Nickels are very different from war nickels.

Buffalo (or Indian Head) nickels were struck from 1913-1938 and were only ever made from a copper-nickel alloy.

The Jefferson nickel series started in 1938 and has been made of the same copper-nickel alloy except during WW II (1942-45). Then the coins were struck in a silver alloy because nickel was needed for the war effort.

Please determine what the date is on your coin and whether it has an Indian Head on the front or a picture of Thomas Jefferson. Then post a new question in the form "What is the value of a <date> US nickel?" in the box at the top of the page and click the GO button. <date> is of course the year shown on your nickel.

What is stainless silver?

Silver, over time, is oxidised by air and loses its shine. Stainless silver is electoplated with nickel (as is stainless steel) to prevent the oxidation. Electroplating involves immersing the silver object in a solution of a nickel salt and applying a negative charge to the silver to attract the positive nickel ions in the solution to form a nickel coating on the silver.

What is a 1 ounce silver buffalo coin that does NOT have the American Indian on the back and the buffalo is facing right not the left worth?

It isn't an error, it is a privately minted round. It isn't legal tender and the actual design gives it no value. What does give it value however, is the 1 troy ounce of silver in it, at the time of writing silver was around $28.69 an ounce, so that is what your silver round is worth. Keep in mind that silver prices are very volatile and increase or decrease daily.

When was the buffalo nickel last minted?

Buffalo nickels were minted from 1913 to 1938.Coins dated 1938 were only struck at Denver. At the time the mint was preparing the new Jefferson design but production was delayed. An extra run of the buffalo design was made to meet the need for additional nickels in circulation.

Value of a 1942 Jefferson Nickel?

There were 2 versions of the nickel produced during that year. On the reverse of your coin, above the Monticello there could be a large mintmark of a P, D, or S over it. This means you have a war nickel, during WWII the nickel had its nickel content replaced with 35% silver so these coins, regardless of condition are worth their silver content which at the time of writing is worth around $1.55. However, if your coin does not have a large mintmark on the reverse, it is just a common nickel and in circulated condition is really only worth face value to around 15 cents.
