Assuming the coin is an American Silver Eagle 1 ounce bullion coin. The value is tied to the spot price of silver at the time of sale. As of 9-03-12 it's $32.10 per ounce. This price is a little less than you could buy it for and a little more than you could sell it for. But it gives you an idea of value. Collectors versions of this coin do have higher values.
NOTE: The spot price of silver and other precious metals changes by the minute when the market is open. So the value of this coin will go up and down.

The metal value would be 90% of the spot price of an oz of silver, currently spot is $40 an oz, so the coin would be valued at $36. Seems the coin collectors have no clue what silver is worth so they value coins at below spot.
