Best Answer

The cell wall can be made up of many different substances, but most cell walls have one major component and some others that strengthen the cell wall or help with recognition of or association with other cells

  • Cellulose (6-carbon sugar polymer) forms the backbone of plant cell walls - hemicellulose (5-carbon sugar polymer) and pectin (galacturonic acid polymer) are also present
  • Chitin forms fungal cell walls (polymer of N-acetylglucosamine: glucose-derived amide between glucosamine and acetic acid)
  • Peptidoglycan (D-amino acids with bound sugars) forms most bacterial and archaeal cell walls. These also have an S-layer that is bound to the peptidoglycan or other cell wall components.
