The moon presents in the "waning crescent" phase during roughly the week
before each New Moon. During that time, the visible portion of the moon is
less than half of a full circle, and decreases as time passes.
The phase of the Moon that comes immediately before the new Moon phase is the waning crescent phase.
If the moon appears tiny and showing a sliver of light, it is likely in the waxing crescent phase. This phase occurs just after the new moon and before the first quarter moon, when the illuminated portion is increasing.
