Not all the chemicals in concrete completely hydrate as it cures and this high alkaline condition exist and continues for years. You've heard about "Alkali Burn" causing paints to peel or blister?? This is why! The chemicals in a concrete interior are allowed to migrate out to a surface and contaminates can enter an interior through the Gel-Pore / Capillary system found in all concretes. A sealer is applied to prevent this!! Choose a sealer that comes with a warranty for waterproofing [15 years] and one that is compatible with you tile manufacturers list of approved adhesives. Otherwise you may void any warranty on the tiles and or adhesive. Do not use a sealer that allows for a subsequent [Second] application!! Ask yourself what happened to the first coat?? What chemicals are used by carpet professionals to remove animal odors from concrete?
Animal odors emitting from a concrete surface is caused from urine being absorbed into the concrete. After it enters the gel-pore/capillary system in the concrete, bacteria form and you get the "Kennel Smell". This is of course is assuming all solid waste has been removed from the surface. ( Yes, concrete is very absorbent ) I use a cleaner that kills the bacteria [even Parvo virus= kennel cough] first, then apply a penetrating sealer. This product enters a porous concrete through the gel-pore structure reacts with the Alkali found in all Portland Cement products and forms a solid inside giving you a waterproof and acid resistant concrete. Depending on how contaminated the concrete is, the first application may displace contaminates and force them to the surface. This may require a wash and rinse to remove, then determine if an additional application is needed. Bottom line: When a concrete is waterproofed with this product you get a 15 year warranty on waterproofing, no more contaminates enter the concrete and any smell will be from fresh waste On and not In the concrete!
