children raced to safety, and birds flew away as the river flooded the banks.
Erosion
Abrasion occurs then rocks and stones, picked up by the glacier through plucking, are rubbed against the bedrock at the bottom and side of the glacier, as the glacier passes, pulled down hill by gravity. This causes wearing on the landscape.
When a river flows, particles within the water wear away the sides of the river bank. This happens as they meander (when a river curves around corners) this causes water to push on the outer sides and push even more, wearing away in great curves. They can, however, get wider by weakening the banks. This however, depends on the circumstances, amount of rainfall, soil pH and other factors.
On flood planes the water erodes away the banks of the river. The Eroded dirt and sediment fall into the river.
There are 4 main processes of erosion: 1) Hydraulic action: The sheer force of the river water removes loose material from the bed and banks of the river. It is most effective on the banks and can lead to undercutting and collapse. 2) Corrasion (not corrosion) / abrasion: This is the wearing away of the bed and banks by the river's load. The load can vary from small particles of clay and sand to large boulders. This is the main type of erosion in most rivers. 3) Attrition: When pieces of rock are broken away form the bed and banks, the edges are usually sharp. However, in swirling water rocks and stones collide with each other and with the bed and banks. Over time the sharp edges become smooth and the pieces of rock become smaller in size. 4) Solution: Some rocks, such as limestone, dissolve slowly in river water which contains dissolved carbon dioxide from the air.
Over time the moving water carries particles of the river bed and banks away, and if there happens to be a flood that can happen much more quickly.
Horizontal erosion is also known as lateral erosion. It is the wearing away of earth from a footpath or river bank.
The Grand Canyon was formed by the Colorado River wearing away at the rock over a long period of time. Some estimate in the millions of years.
