The seven governors who lived in the original palace included: Alexander Spotswood Francis Fauquier Norborne Berkeley, Baron de Botetourt Hugh Drysdale William Gooch Robert Dinwiddie John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore It was also home to the post-colonial governors: Patrick Henry, 1776-1779 Thomas Jefferson, 1779-1780
Three important buildings in colonial Williamsburg during the 18th century were the Capitol Building, which was the center of colonial government and is now a museum; the Governor's Palace, which served as the official residence for the royal governors of Virginia; and the Wren Building, which was the main academic building of the College of William & Mary and is still in use today.
