Spain began building missions in Texas in 1716. Two years later, the first civilian settlement in Texas, San Antonio, was established as a way station between the missions and the nearest existing Spanish settlement.
Many Spanish missions were founded in Texas. Many were abandoned or closed, but many still remain, with at least five in San Antonio alone. Some famous ones (all in San Antonio) are Mission San Juan Capistrano, Mission San Jose, and of course, Alamo Mission -- commonly called "The Alamo."
