The US Mint struck 1,000,528-half-dollars during May and June 1926, anticipating an enthusiastic reception for the Sesquicentennial Half Dollars. Many people did not want to purchase the commemorative half-dollar for $1. Approximately 859,408-half-dollars were sent back to the mint to be melted down. Today, the 1926 half-dollar coins are plentiful, and at the bottom of popularity charts for collectors, due to the poor quality of the design.

Then in 1836 the silver half dollar weight was changed to 13.36 grams and was 90% silver.
