What is the weirdest food in Alaska?

There are many. There are also many great foods, but the weirdest that I can think of right now/ in my opinion is..............STINKHEAD !!!!

It very well may be the weirdest in our country. It's an Alaskan Native delicacy and it is just what it sounds like..........a stinky head.

Natives traditionally are not as wasteful as they rest of us and they generally use ever part of whatever animal or fish they harvest if at all possible.

So, when preparing the salmon they've caught, they cut off the head, they dig a hole in the ground, line the hole with moss and lichens etc., they place the fish head into the hole, eyes, teeth, brains, skin, everything. They then cover it with the soil removed from the hole. They make sure it's buried well to keep the head from being exposed to air. They allow the salmon head to rot and furment in the hole for a period of time. When the time is right they dig the head up and it's time to eat !!! Somehow it's safe to eat as if it's buried properly and no air gets to it, no unsafe bacteria can grow, so it's essentially safe to eat. When it's dug up and ready to eat it has the consistancy of say, maybe yogurt. Kinda mushy, just oozes off the skull in a semi liquid / semi solid consistancy. YUM YUM ! Remember, skin...eyes...tonque.....brains......all the good stuff......it's all in there !! I've seen it many times, I've smelled it, but I've never eaten it. I've had the chance, just haven't had the courage ! I may be off a little in the details and preparation as I've never prepared it myself..........but you get the idea I think. Anyone hungry ?
