Both tornadoes an whirlpools are different types of vortex. But besides that they are very different. For one thing, how tornadoes function and develop is more complex than it is for whirlpools.

I'm sure as you know, EF5 tornadoes are the strongest most dangerous tornadoes on the Earth. EF5 tornadoes can blow away a house in a couple seconds and the damage from an EF5 can be pretty horrifying. The only thing left after a tornado, like that, goes by would just be the foundation so that's is pretty bad. Look up tornadoes on Wikipedia and you will see pictures from what the different tornadoes could do
Tornadoes have occurred since the dinosaurs and beyond. The first recorded tornado was, to my knowledge, was in Britain in 1091. The size was F4, and it destroyed the London Bridge, homes, and chapels. So, in conclusion, tornadoes were always known.
