In the 1939 film version, his name is given as Professor Marvel. But that's not the name that author and Oz series originator Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 5, 1919] gives him. For the Wizard's name actually is Oscar Zoroaster Phadrig Isaac Norman Henkle Emmanuel Ambrose Diggs. As he grows up, the Wizard finds the name too long. So he goes by his initials: O.Z.P.I.N.H.E.A.D. But then he fears that some consider the initials to be a commentary on his intelligence. And so he decides to go by O.Z.
Professor Marvel is the Wizard's name in Kansas in the beloved 1939 movie version of "The Wizard of Oz."
Specifically, Professor Marvel is a character only in the movie version of the original 1900 book edition. The character does not appear among those created by Oz book author and Oz series creator Lyman Frank Baum (May 15, 1856 - May 6, 1919). In the movie, he becomes the Wizard in what appears to be Dorothy Gale's dream adventures in Oz.
Oscar Zoroaster Phadrig Isaac Norman Henkel Emmannuel Ambroise Diggs are all the names that make up the Wizard of Oz's complete name. It was a mouthful. The young Wizard could find no acceptable and manageable way of using his full name all of the time. For example, he thought of going by all of his initials. But it bothered him that the initials spelled 'O.Z.P.I.N.H.E.A.D.
So by the time that he sailed accidentally by hot air balloon into Oz, he had settled on 'OZ'. That worked well in his new home. Unbeknownst to him when choosing the letters, the rulers of Oz always were called either Oz if male or Ozma if female.
The real name of the Wizard isn't revealed until Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz. In that fourth book in the series of royal histories of the lands and peoples of Oz, the Wizard explains that he was born in Omaha, as the son of a politician. His father gave him the first name of Oscar, but then tacked on Zoroaster Phadrig Isaac Norman Henkle Emmannuel Ambroise. The last name was Diggs. Growing up, the Wizard went by the initials O.Z. He didn't use his other middle names. For the names were so many that it was a challenge to remember them. And the remaining initials spelled P.I.N.H.E.A.D., which the Wizard felt an insulting reflection on his intelligence.
In the book, the man playing the Wizard is not given a name. Dorothy calls him The Great Humbug.
