Pilot or Premiere

&

Finale

Answer:

A pilot is a test episode. Most TV series in the USA start with a pilot which the network then tests with focus groups to see if they think it will be a popular show. Some shows get a series pick-up without shooting a pilot first. An example of this is the series "The Newsroom" which went immediately into production.

If a pilot goes to series, more often than not it is the first episode to air and therefore becomes the series premiere. Again, this is not always the case. The series "Firefly" aired the second episode first, making that the Series Premiere. The pilot was aired after the series was cancelled three months later. A season premiere is the first episode for that particular season only.

The series finaleis the last episode of a series to be broadcast. There is also a season finalewhich is at the end of the show's broadcast season and will return next season.

And now there is the fallfinale for series that air about half of their season in the late summer into late fall, but then take a hiatus from airing (they continue to shoot episodes, regardless) only to return in late winter/early spring. For some cable networks like USA Network, they will also split their season, starting to air in January or February, have a spring finaleand hiatus of several months and return in the summer to finish the season. Or, the converse: air at least half of the season's episodes starting in June or July, have a summer finale, and return to air in January the following hear. The press tends to refer to these split seasons not as one (e.g.: Season 2), but as two half seasons (Season 2 & Season 2.5), however the production company, studio and network do not count them as separate seasons.
