Roman Catholic answer: The reason that I was told, years ago in the seminary, as that they were a replacement for the 150 psalms from The Book of Psalms in the Bible that the monks, for centuries would recite each week. Most people back then could not read and so they would recite 150 Our Fathers or Hail Marys to make up for the 150 psalms that they did not know. It may just be a pious legend, I really don't know, but it is the only explanation I have ever heard.
