The Model 40 "Centennial" was manufactured from 1952 - 1974. It had a grip safety that could be pinned down. It was named the Centennial because it was introduced the same year that Smith & Wesson was celebrating it's 100th birthday. It was initially marketed as a more advanced version of the famous S&W Hammerless "Lemon Squeezer". Due to popular demand the Centennial was brought back into production in the 1990's without the grip safety. The Airweight version was the Model 42.
