The lack of light in the profundal zone determines the type of biological community that can live in this region, which is distinctly different from the community in the overlying waters. Aphotic = no light so it is the zone below the depth of where light can penetrate. Depends on several things. The clarity of the water. less stuff in the water the farther light can go. There are no plants in the aphotic zone. Generally, there is less oxygen (and sometimes none) in the aphotic zone, but some animals can be found there. It depends on how deep this zone is and how well mixed the water column is.

There are three light zones in the ocean. 1) Sunlight Zone, also called the Euphotic Zone. The Sunlight Zone gets lots of light. 2) Twilight Zone, also called the Disphotic Zone. The Twilight Zone gets little light. 3) Midnight Zone, also called the Aphotic Zone. The Midnight Zone gets absolutely no light. As the depth increases, the amount of light decreases and the pressure decreases.
