Ludwig Christian Lauer was a German coin manufacturer who made British 'TOY' coins. They have very little, if any, collectors' value. You could do more research on LAUER by contacting Spink's Coin Department in London on 0207 563 4000.

Are British coins minted in coin rotation?

No, not any longer. The last British coins minted in coin rotation were the Victorian silver coins of 1887. Notably, the 1887 Halfcrown, Florin, Shilling, Sixpence, Threepence and the Maundy coins. Prior to that, British coins were first regularly struck in rotation from about 1660. Referring only to British coins, "coin rotation" or "die axis" is the striking of a coin so that the obverse and reverse are 180 degrees out of alignment. This was once a good way to determine if the coin was genuine since forgers rarely bothered with coin rotation, or only got it partly right, rotating the coin at something other than 180 degrees. These days, forgers are a little more careful.

What is a Shilling coin?

British Shillings have ONE SHILLING inscribed on the reverse of the coin from late 1887 onwards. British Shillings minted from early 1887 back into history, do not have any indication as to the face value of the coin. You would need to be able to recognise the coin from its size and appearance. Shillings minted in the 17th century during the time of James I and Charles I had the Roman numerals XII on them, indicating 12 Pence (One Shilling).

How much would a coin from 1887 be worth Queen Victoria mal y pense?

The inscription "HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE" (Evil to him who evil thinks), appears on 1887 British sterling silver Sixpences, Shillings and Halfcrown coins. A denomination or a description of the coin would help a lot in identifying it.

Can you show a picture of the 1887 British Half-Sovereign minted in Sydney?

The coin to which you refer is a British Half-Sovereign minted at the Sydney Mint. The 1887 Half-Sovereign coins minted at the Royal Mint London and coins minted at the Sydney Mint are almost identical except for the mintmark which is a very small "S" below the shield on the reverse. Pictures of a specific coin are difficult to come by. Frequently you should be able to find one on eBay, but the picture is withdrawn after the coin is sold. See the link below and look for the Victoria - "1887 Half-Sovereign, London Mint" down towards the bottom of the page.

Why does your 1887 silver crown have a hole either edge?

The 1887 British Crown (Five Shillings), or any other British Crown, should not have any holes in them at all. You can only assume that somebody has drilled the holes deliberately as a means of mounting the coin as an ornament or a piece of jewellery, etc. Modified coins have no collector value.
