If you are talking about an engine it sounds like it is the distributor.

Recheck the spark plug wires. Make sure they are on right. Also make sure when you installed the rotor and cap that they are on correctly also. Some times the distributor cap can be installed 180 degrees wrong direction. The rotor usually only goes on one way, but check it anyway. Always mark the cap and rotor for just this reason.
