If you're referring to 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton specifications...... I believe that is the amount of loadable weight you can safely haul in the cargo compartment? Or basically from the rear axle area to the end of the vehicle. So if you have a 1/2 ton (1500 series) without any added suspension upgrades, you can load 1,000 lbs (or half a ton of weight) to the cargo area including "tongue weight" which is not to be confused with the overall weight of a trailer (the overall weight being pulled can and is usually much greater) if you have proper equipment. Like wise a 3/4 ton (2500 series) raises that load weight to 1,500 lbs.
