That is a little casting identification number in the cluster lense. It is not a malfunction indicator, just ignore it.

Dana 35 or Dana 44
The tire will have the pressure on the sidewall. I have seen 44psi there, but, that feels a little hard to me. I have kept them at 40psi and been just fine. The pressure listed on the side of the tire is the max safe pressure for that tire. The recommended pressure for a Jeep Liberty is on the label affixed to the driver's door jamb. It is more in the 30-35 psi range.
Typically they would have a Dana 35 rear axle, unless if someone has upraded it to a Dana 44.

The 1996 ( most other model years ) Jeep Cherokee has either the DANA 35 rear axle or the Chrysler 8.25 rear axle. ABS brakes are optional with the Dana 35 . The Chrysler 8.25 never had ABS. The front axle is the DANA 30.
call your local dealer with your vin. # and they will be able to tell you what type of rear axles are in your jeep or you can look at the rear-end cover and locate an info. tab on one of the mounting bolts. Dana 35 or Dana 44
