Unter Den Linden
The Linden Tree dates back to classical times throughout Europe as a symbol of community and friendship. It is particularly relevant to Germany where the Linden (or European Lime) was often a focus of village of life, as it still is in parts of France. The name of the main avenue of Berlin, 'Unter den Linden' (Under the Linden Trees) reflects this tradition. There is also a long Germanic tradition of the linden tree as a lovers' rendezvous and as a sign that all is well, possibly because of the sweet smell of the tree's flowers and the honey made from them.
