It's "newspeak", meaning that they want to eradicate the original language and most of it's vocabulary and replace it with simple words. For example worse would mean plus-bad in newspeak. worst would mean plus-plus-bad.

Why?

The idea behind this is that if society doesn't know a word for a deed, they will not be able to do it.

For example - if you wouldn't know the word racism - would you practise racism? In Orwell's work it would be more likley words like putsch or rebellion.

If only the leader knows these words, it gives him incredible power to control society.
