Why did Hitler wear his mustache like that?

Hitler had a rather large mustache before the second war, but according to a soldier who knew him during the first World War, the large mustache would not fit under the gas mask so he was ordered to trim it.

The Fuhrer admired Charlie Chaplin, and emulated him by shaving his moustache accordingly. This theory is false, however - Hitler banned Chaplin from ever entering Germany on the grounds of 'international Jewry' (Chaplin was not actually Jewish).

Another is that his minister of Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, told him that he needed a distinct look, so he shaved off the edges.

When he was unable to remove his moustache and stop the itching it caused him he found that war and the oppresion of others was the only was to take his mind off it

I've always thought he was shaving one morning, looking at himself in the mirror and muttering and going on about politics and getting himself all worked up, and forgot to shave under his nose. When he went out somebody said "Adi, what's with the upper lip?" And he said "I MEANT to do that".
