a) Mohr Balance: devised by Karl F. Mohr

b) Pycnometer Method

  • pycnometer - a small glass bottle with a ground glass stopper through which a hole is bored
- the bottle is weighed empty, then full of water, the full of the given liquid.

c) Hare's Method: devised by Robert Hare

- measure specific gravity by balancing the pressure cause by a column of a given liquid against the equal pressure caused by a column of water.

d) Use of Hydrometer

  • for rapid measurement of the approximate specific gravity of a liquid.
  • hydrometer - has a long stem with Hg(Mercury) at it's lower end to make it float upright in the liquid being measured; graduations in the stem indicate the value of the specific gravity.

Specific gravity is the ratio of the density of gas to the density of air.

First the density of the gas is determined.

Density is the mass of a unit volume of the substance in constant temperature (20 0C) and pressure ( 1 Bar).

Like solids Gas have mass as it is only a change in the state of the matter.A container of unit volume x m3 will have y kg mass . The density will work out to be y kg / x m3 . The mass of the gas can be determined by the weight of the container plus gas - minus the weight of the container.

The density of the gas in ratio with the density of air (1 kg/m3) gives the specific gravity of the gas in a ratio number.

If the gas is less denser than air it will be <1 while if it is more denser than air it will be >1. .

specific gravity = relative density ( relative to water), water is 1000 kg / cubic metre, say iron is 7800 kg / cubic metre, then relative density is:

7800/1000 = 7.8, or 7.8 times the density of water

What instrument used to measure the specific gravity of urine is called?

A urinometer is an instrument used to measure the specific gravity of urine. It consists of a float that is placed in a tube filled with urine, and the specific gravity is read off a scale on the side of the tube.

What unit is used with specific gravity?

The specific gravity of a substance is the ratio of te density of the substance to the density of water. It is, therefore, a unitless measure.

What instrument measures the specific gravity of a liquid?

A hydrometer is commonly used to measure the specific gravity of a liquid. It is a glass or plastic tube with a weighted bottom that floats in the liquid, and the specific gravity is read at the level of the liquid where the hydrometer surface intersects.

How you can measure specific gravity of Diesel?

To measure the specific gravity of diesel, you can use a hydrometer specifically designed for measuring the specific gravity of liquids. The hydrometer is floated in a sample of the diesel, and the reading on the scale will give you the specific gravity of the diesel. Make sure to calibrate the hydrometer at the correct temperature for accurate results.

What is the relationship between density and specific gravity?

Specific gravity is the ratio of the density of a substance to the density of a reference substance. Density is a measure of how mass is distributed in a given volume, while specific gravity compares the density of a substance to that of water. In other words, specific gravity is a dimensionless quantity that provides a relative measure of how dense a substance is compared to water.
